Today I am Grateful for:
1. Silence
2. Speech
3. Story (I caught a bit of this Vincent Harding interview today, and felt like his take about the value of Story in our lives was a message meant just for me.)
4. Snakes
5. Sleep.
So be it.

I adore your gratitude lists! Whenever I am going through a difficult time, I make a thankful list. I try to list three things at bedtime I am grateful for that day. It’s the best kind of prayer. It’s also really rewarding to have your family do this with you. I love to hear what they are thankful for and their lists often remind me of more things to be thanful for and vice versa, until we have a huge list to carry us to sleep.

I love that idea of sharing them with your family. I decided to do my lists as a poetic experience, to break myself out of my rut, and also as a way to balance out some of the ways I respond negatively or anxiously to the world. I was just talking to a friend today about how having children has heightened my sense of foreboding about things like climate change and violence and injustice in the world. And the gratitude lists help me not get too close to the cliffs of despair. Hope. Hope and light to you.
